Workshop Description

This seminar teaches strategies essential to counseling and advocacy for frail elders, people with disabilities and their families. Participants learn client engagement, adjustment-to-loss, and family mediation counseling strategies. Ethical issues associated with conflict between family and client values, and client right to privacy and self-determination are explored.

• Identify trust-building strategies for engaging frail elders and their adult-children in a constructive, therapeutic, counseling relationship
• Describe the nature and impact of loss and grieving as the central clinical issues impacting the psychological, emotional and medical stability of elderly clients
• Define coping strategies for adult-children dealing with medical and financial crisis associated with caring for an aging parent
• Identify stressors associated with family role confusion and competition between family and career priorities
• Clarify ethical issues affecting client right to privacy, right to self-determination, and right to folly
• Define illness-prevention and the diversion of institutional admissions as relevant counseling outcomes for this population
